ART FESTIVAL「FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS」
Theater & Art Installation, 2023
Theater & Art Installation, 2023
"A word pronounced is dead the moment it is uttered. The only thing that can keep it alive is memory."
This piece is born from that silence, that breath caught in between. Created within a week of rehearsals, its second half surrenders entirely to improvisation, embracing the raw, the unspoken, the inevitable.
Repetition, cycles, monochrome—the absence of color is not emptiness but a reflection of the everyday, the ordinary.
The stage, stripped to its bones, with white tables stacked rigidly, speaks of structure, of systems, of constructs we move within. But within this order, bodies weave and entangle, caught in an unspoken rhythm—a karma unfolding, much like One Hundred Years of Solitude, where time loops back on itself, fated and relentless.
Three performers—a unity, yet individuals. They orbit one another, drawn in and cast out, mirroring the push and pull of existence. In the end, there are no answers, only echoes—of movement, of presence, of speech never spoken.
Art Installation, 2023
"Guerrero, at that time of night, is more like a cemetery than an avenue... a cemetery in the year 2666... bathed in the dispassionate fluids of an eye that tried so hard to forget one particular thing that it ended up forgetting everything else."
Emerging from a collective haze of suppressed memories and rewritten narratives, this installation seeks to traverse the liminal space between oblivion and remembrance. It unfolds in three acts—visual art, installation, and film screening—each inviting the participant to navigate the delicate threads of existence.
Act I: The Circle of Birth and Death
Entering the space, one is encircled by curated boards, arranged in a ring. Red ribbons descend from above, weaving connections between each piece, forming both guide and barrier along the path. This circular formation evokes the cyclical nature of life and death, the eternal return. The materials—sturdy, unyielding, draped in somber tones—mirror the weight of the mundane, with black shrouds suspended overhead, casting shadows reminiscent of forgotten past.
Act II: The Liminal Passage
Beyond the circle, a vast expanse of white fabric stretches across the floor, splattered with crimson hues. Scattered texts and images lie amidst this landscape, their meanings fragmented and elusive. Above, translucent cloths bear verses inscribed in red, swaying gently, whispering tales of impermanence. The lightness of the materials contrasts with the preceding rigidity, symbolizing the ephemeral nature of living. As participants tread carefully through this disordered realm, they experience the fluidity and chaos inherent in existence, the delicate dance between order and entropy.
Act III: The Echo of Memory
The journey culminates in the screening of Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda, a documentary that delves into the composer’s reflections on life, art, and the passage of time. Sakamoto's contemplation of mortality and creativity resonates with the installation's themes, offering a sonic mirror to the visual and tactile experiences encountered. His exploration of sound as both memory and defiance underscores the installation's intent to externalize the internal, to communicate the incommunicable, and to transform personal recollection into collective consciousness.
In traversing this triptych, participants are invited to confront the tension between forgetting and remembering, to acknowledge the fragility of documented history, and to find meaning within the spaces of ambiguity.
